Best Hindi Films - Top 25 Bollywood Movies Of All Times
Bollywood produced its first film in 1913 (Raja Harishchandra). Since then Bollywood produces an average of 150-200 films per year. Of these hundreds of films, only a small handful see any degree of success, only a selected few go on to taste the heights of success, and very rarely attain the status of classics and all-time greats. Despite the weaknesses of Bollywood, the industry has produced some memorable films. One of the fellow hubbers (ktoo) had made a request for a hub on the basics of Bollywood for the uninitiated and a list of the best Bollywood movies. Below, I have compiled a list of the Bollywood Movies which are all time greats in my humble opinion. I have personally seen each and every movie of this list, over a rather long period of the last 15 years or so. If you want to know about Bollywood and Indian cinema, these films are strongly recommended. The list has been arranged on the basis of the year of release of the film. I hope you will enjoy the list and the films.

Chandralekha (1948)
M.K.Radha, T.R.Rajkumari, Ranjan, Yashodhara Katju, V.N.Janki, S.Krishnamurti
Produced By: Gemini Studios
Directed By: S.S.Wasan
Music By: S. Rajeshwar Rao
The film was originally made in Tamil at a grand budget of US$ 60,000 (US$ 30 million, or Rs. 150 crores at current rates. This would make it THE most expensive film in India till date!!). It sank without a trace in its original language. Then, it was released all over India in Hindi, and went on to set box-office records. The main highlights of the movie are a drum-dance sequence and a long sword fight. Its lavishness is to be seen to be believed. Also, the film was the first all-India hit.

Do Bigha Zameen (1953)
Balraj Sahni, Nirupa Roy.
Producer & Director: Bimal Roy
Music: Salil Choudhary
This film is a trendsetter in many respects. It was made by the legendary Bengali film-director, Bimal Roy. He combined the sensibilities of realistic, hard-hitting cinema with the elements of commercial success. This film is considered the genesis of the Indian New-Wave cinema movement, locally known as the Art Cinema. This film was the first from India to win the prestigious prize at the Cannes Film Festival. One of the most famous (and moving) scenes from the film is when Balraj Sahni pulls a rickshaw, chasing a horse carriage. The rider on the rickshaw keeps on promising more money if he is able to catch the carriage. All through this, Balraj keeps smiling in anticipation of getting more money, unmindful that he is pushing himself to the limit. Powerful, powerful stuff!

Devdas (1955)
Dilip Kumar, Vaijayanti Mala, Suchitra Sen, Motilal, Pran, Johnny Walker
Produced By: Bimal Roy Productions.
Directed By: Bimal Roy
Music By: S.D.Burman
Actually, there are ten films with the same name, based on an eponymous novel by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyaya. All have starred the biggest names at that time (KL Sehgal, Dilip Kumar, Shahrukh Khan etc). Yet, I think the one starring Dilip Kumar is the best. The cinematography of the film conveys a dark, grim foreboding which is so fitting to the theme of the movie. It is a tragedy, depicting the classic theme of falling in love and then losing it all. The character of Chunni Babu, played by Motilal deserves special mention. Once again, a Bimal Roy movie!

Pyaasa (1957)
Guru Dutt, Mala Sinha, Waheeda Rahman, Rehman, Johnny Walker, Mehmood
Produced By: Guru Dutt Films
Directed By: Guru Dutt
Music By: S. D. Burman
This is one of the best movies from the stable of the hugely talented Guru Dutt. He originally wanted to cast "Tragedy King" Dilip Kumar in the lead, but he declined. Then, Guru Dutt decided to field himself, and as they say, the rest is history. The film is a hard hitting look at the corruption and materialism of the Indian society. It is said that one of the songs in the movie ("Hum Aapki Aankhon Mein") was inserted at the insistence of the distributors as a sort of comic relief. They were afraid that the pessimistic outlook of the movie would be a disaster at the Box Office. Yet, the most famous song of the movie, which also marks the end, is the timeless "Ye Duniya Agar Mil Bhi Jaye To Kya Hai". Pyaasa has the distinction of being the only Hindi movie to figure in the Time list of Top 100 movies of all times.

Mother India (1957)
Sunil Dutt, Nargis, Raaj Kumar, Kanhaiya Lal, Rajendra Kumar.
Produced By: Mehboob Productions
Directed By: Mehboob
Music By: Naushad
A classic directed by the well known Mehboob Khan, this is the first Indian movie to be nominated for the Oscars (in the Foreign Language Category). It was actually a joint Indo-Russian venture, and understandably, makes a compelling case for socialism. It also depicts in a dramatic way the bane of the Indian farmer: DEBT. Another enduring theme of the movie is the woman power. One of the songs of the film, "Holi Ayi re Kanhai", is one of the Holi anthems, hugely popular to this day.

Chalti ka Naam Gaadi (1958)
Kishore Kumar, Madhubala, Ashok Kumar, Anoop Kumar, Sajjan, K.N.Singh, Cuckoo
Produced By: K.S.Films
Directed By: Satyen Bose
Music By: S.D.Burman
This film is one of the first genuine comedies of Bollywood. It stars the three famous brothers, Ashok Kumar, Anoop Kumar and the inimitable Kishore Kumar. The light, breezy comedy also stars the beautiful Madhubala. The highlight of the film is the many songs that adorn the film, the most famous being "Ek Ladki Bheegi Bhaagi Si". My personal favourite, though, is "Hum The Wo Thi" sung by Kishore Kumar and Manna Dey. It is a hilarious, hilarious song! The expressions on the faces of the two brothers, Kishore and Anoop, are guaranteed to bring a smile to your face every time you watch the song.

Mughal-e-Azam (1960)
Prithviraj Kapur, Dilip Kumar, Madhubala, Durga Khote
Produced By: K. Asif
Directed by: K. Asif
Music by: Naushad
Truly a film of epic proportions, it took a whole nine years to complete! The lavishness of the film is huge, matched only by the scope of its narration. The role of Prince Salim is played with the usual, understated elegance by Dilip Kumar. Prithviraj Kapur, the senior most of the Kapur clan plays one of the most convincing portrayals of Akbar the great in the history of Bollywood. The most famous song of the movie, "Pyar Kiya to Darna Kya", was re-written 105 times by the lyricist Shakeel Badayuni before it met the approval of Naushad, the Music Director! This song was shot on a princely sum of Rs 10 million, which was about 10 times the budget of an average Hindi movie at that time! This film was a top grosser for 15 years, till it was displaced by Sholay. Incidentally, this was the first movie in the world to be colorized from an original black and white version.

Saheb Bivvi Aur Gulam (1962)
Guru Dutt, Meena Kumari, Sapru, Waheeda Rehman, Rehman
Produced By: Guru Dutt Films
Directed By: Abrar Alvi
Music By: Hemant Kumar
Another timeless classic produced by the hugely talented Guru Dutt, this movie was both a critical and commercial success. It is based on a novel by Bimal Mitra, and depicts the decadent world of the Bengali upper class, which was losing their pre-eminence in the British period. It won four Filmfare awards, and was nominated for the Golden Bear at the prestigious Berlin Film Festival. The film also has one of the best and most memorable roles played by Meena Kumari.

Guide (1965)
Dev Anand, Waheeda Rehman
Produced By: Navketan
Directed By: Vijay Anand
Music By: S.D.Burman
Another one of my all-time personal favorites, this movie is based on a novel by the respected writer, R K Narayan (Best remembered for his memorable fictional town, Malgudi). It is a moving story of the power of faith. In one of the scenes towards the end of the movie, Dev Anand, who is posing as a saint in a village, is asked a question by a journalist. He is fasting to bring rains during a famine, and the journalist (from NBC, as shown in the movie!) asks him whether he really believes it is possible. Dev Anand (Raju, the Guide in the movie) replies: "The people have faith in me, and I have faith in their faith". This is one of the best performances by Dev Anand. The film also scores for its unforgettable music.

Pakeezah (1971)
Ashok Kumar, Meena Kumari, Raaj Kumar, Veena, Sapru, Kamal Kapoor, Nadira
Produced By: Kamal Amrohi
Directed By: Kamal Amrohi
Music By: Ghulam Mohd, Naushad
Starring the debonair Ashok Kumar, stylish Raajkumar and the beautiful Meena Kumari, this is one of the most enduring tales of romance in the Indian Cinema. This magnum opus by Kamaal Amrohi took 14 long years to complete! It is on of the best films based on the themes of Kothas, Tawaifs and Mujras. During the shooting of the film, Meena Kumari became very sick, and could just complete the film before her death.

Bobby (1973)
Rishi Kapoor, Dimple, Premnath, Pran, Durga Khote, Arun Irani
Produced By: Raj Kapoor
Directed By: Raj Kapoor
Music By: Laxmikant Pyarelal
Bobby introduced a new genre to Bollywood: the Teenage Romance. The bold theme of teenage love, rebellion and elopement was repeated in a number of films after the release of this movie. Raj Kapoor is said to be inspired by the Archie series of comics in making this film. This film became so popular that a lot of parents named their children Bobby after this film was released (this name was suitable both for boys and girls). The music for the film was also a big hit, especially the songs "Hum Tum Ek Kamre me Band Ho" and "Jhooth Bole Kauwwa Kaate".

Garm Hawa (1973)
Balraj Sahni, Nirupa Roy, Farooq Shiekh, A.K.Hangal, Jalal Agha
Produced By: Absivani Isan Arya
Directed By: M.S.Sathyu
Music By: Aziz A.Khan/Bahadur Khan
The other memorable film of the year 1973 was an absolute antithesis of Bobby. It is one of the best (perhaps THE best) films ever made on the subject of partition of India. It shows the tales and travails of a Muslim family in the years after partition. The head of the family (played poignantly by Balraj Sahni) is torn between the option of staying in India or migrating to Pakistan. He watches helplessly even as his closest friends and family members go to Pakistan, as he chooses to stay back. It was directed by the M S Sathyu, and is based on a short story by the noted Urdu writer, Ismat Chugtai. The screenplay was written by another noted Urdu poet and writer Kaifi Azmi (father of Shabana Azmi). A powerful, hard hitting movie with some great performances by the actors.

Yaadon ki Baraat (1973)
Dharmendra, Zeenat Aman, Vijay Arora, Tariq, Neetu Singh, Ajit, Imtiyaz, Jalal Agha
Produced By: Nasir Hussain
Directed By: Nasir Hussain
Music By: R. D. Burman
A typical Bollywood masala film, it is based on the theme of siblings separated at birth, and uniting much later in the future. Though the script of the film is very thin in substance, it makes up for that by way of performances and music. The music for the film was given by the legendary R D Burman. The song "Chura Liya Hai" is one of the most famous, romantic and timeless songs of the Indian Film Industry.

Chupke-Chupke (1975)
Amitabh, Dharmendra, Jaya Bhaduri, Usha Kiran, Sharmila Tagore, Om Prakash, Asrani
Produced By: N.C.Sippy
Directed By: Hrishikesh Mukherjee
Music By: S.D.Burman
One of the cutest, cleanest and the best comedies ever to come out of the Bollywood stable. But then look at the cast and the crew of the film! Directed by the legendary storyteller Hrishikesh Mukherjee, music by S D Burman and boasting of such stars as Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore, Jaya Bhaduri(nee Bachchan) and Om Prakash, the film had "success" written all over it! And what a success it was! It is a hilarious tale of mix-ups and confusion, with great performances by all the actors. Not to mention the great music, with one of the songs, "Abke Sajan Saawan Mein" dripping mischief from every syllable!

Sholay (1975)
Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Sanjeev Kumar, Amjad Khan, Jaya Bhaduri, A.K. Hangal
Produced By: G. P. Sippy
Directed By: Ramesh Sippy
Music By: R. D. Burman
This was the second movie which cast Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra together, and it is one of the biggest ever hits of the Hindi Film Industry. The film boasts of heavy fire-power in the form of the biggest guns of the Bollywood. The film is heavily influenced by the Westerns, and is loosely based on the theme of Seven Samurai (by Akiro Kurosawa). In fact, if you are ever given a choice to watch just ONE movie to understand Bollywood, I would recommend Sholay. Just go for it! This film was such a blockbuster; it played for a record 286 weeks in one movie theatre in Mumbai! Every moviegoer remembers a number of dialogues from this movie, especially the ones spoken by the villain, Gabbar Singh. ("Kitne aadmi they?" or "Ab Tera Kya hoga, Kaaliya"! God!) Just go, watch the movie!

Kabhie Kabhie (1976)
Amitabh Bachchan, Rakhee, Shashi Kapoor, Waheeda,Neetu. Rishi Kapoor, Parikshit Sahni, Naseem, Simi
Produced By: Yash Chopra
Directed By: Yash Chopra
Music By: Khayyam
You cannot describe Bollywood without mentioning the master of the love triangles, Yash Chopra! The film Kabhie-Kabhie is probably one of the best love triangles ever to come out of the stable of Yash Chopra. The film is an interesting tale spanning over two generations. The great music composed by Khayyam is one of the highlights of the film. The title song "Kabhie-Kabhie" is one of my all time favorites.

Amar Akbar Anothony (1977)
Amitabh, Vinod Khanna, Rishi Kapoor, Jeevan, Neetu, Parveen Babi, Shabana Azmi, Pran
Produced By: Manmohan Desai
Directed By: Manmohan Desai
Music By: Laxmikant Pyarelal
A complete masala movie, containing each and every flavor that goes into the making of the typical Bollywood extravaganza. This film, just like Yaadon Ki Baraat, sports the theme of siblings parted by fate in childhood, and later re-united in their youth. This film was also a shot in the arm for secularism, in the typical Bollywood fashion. One of the brothers is raised as a Hindu (Amar), the other as a Muslim (Akbar) and the third as a Christian (Anthony). The film has a memorable score by the duo of Laxmikant-Pyarelal. One of the best recalled scenes is Amitabh Bachchan drunk and tending to himself after he gets a good thrashing during a song. And do you remember the meaningless babble of "juxtaposition to the atmospheric haemoglobin"? Hilarious!

Golmaal (1979)
Amol Palekar, Bindiya Goswami, Utpal Dutt, David, Deven Verma
Produced By: N.N.Sippy, Hrishikesh
Directed By: Hrishikesh Mukherjee
Music By: R.D.Burman
Trust Hrishikesh Mukherjee to make such an entertaining, original and clean comedy, without resorting to the slapstick humor that is so characteristic of the Hindi movies. This is one of the best comedy films of Bollywood. Veteran thespian Uttpal Dutt turns in a memorable performance as a bumbling, confused old man!

Umrao Jaan (1981)
Rekha, Farooq Sheikh, Naseeruddin Shah, Raj Babbar, Prema Narayan, Deena Pathak
Produced By: Muzaffar Ali
Directed By: Muzaffar Ali
Music By: Khayyam
Set in the backdrop of the First War of Indian Independence in 1857, this film is the tale of a noted courtesan, Umrao Jaan Ada. It is one of the best films ever on the subject of courtesans, and has one of the best and the most tasteful mujra performances by Rekha (who plays the role of Umrao Jaan). The film has a haunting, memorable score by Khayyam, and almost all the songs of the movie are remembered and sung till today. Especially songs like "Dil Cheez Kya Hai" and "In Aankhon ki Masti Ke".

Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron (1984)
Naseeruddin, Bhakti Barve, Ravi Vasvani, Satish Shah, Neena Gupta, Om Puri, Pankaj Kapoor.
Produced By: N.F.D.C.
Directed By: Kundan Shah
Music By: Vanraj Bhatia
This movie is the crowning glory of the Parallel Cinema Movement in India. It is a hard hitting, realistic satire on the rotten underbelly of Indian politics, bureaucracy and business. The film boasts of powerhouse performers and note worthies of Art Cinema like Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri and Ravi Baswani. It is one of the most original scripts ever to come out of Bollywood. The last scene of the film is one of the most funny and hilarious sequences of the Hindi Cinema ever!

Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988)
Aamir Khan, Juhi Chawla, Alok Nath, Beena, Dilip Tahil, Nandita Thakur, Reema Lagoo
Produced By: Nasir Hussain
Directed By: Mansoor Khan
Music By: Anand Milind
This film can be credited with turning the tide for Bollywood, when it was laid low by a string of flops in the mid 1980s. It is also a quintessential Bollywood masala film. The film saw success because it introduced freshness in the form of the teenage love story, loosely based on the plot of Romeo and Juliet. The lead roles were played by Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla, both making their debuts as lead actors. The film was also lifted by a memorable score and the fresh voice of Udit Narayan. One of the songs "Papa Kehte Hain" is one of the most successful songs of the Hindi film music.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge (1995)
Shahrukh Khan, Kajol, Parmeet Sethi, Satish Shah, Amrish Puri, Farida Jalal, Anupam Kher, Mandira Bedi
Produced By: Yash Chopra
Directed By: Aditya Chopra
Music By: Jatin Lalit
This film also set a record of its own, just like Sholay. It has played for 700 (yes, SEVEN HUNDRED!!) weeks straight in a Mumbai Theatre (it is still going strong there)! The film boasts of the pair of Sharukh Khan and Kaajol, which has a number of hits to their credit. For the first time ever, the film told the tale of the Indian diaspora. An out and out love story, the film is one of the biggest grossers of Bollywood. Needless to say, the film has also a great musical score by the duo of Jatin-Lalit.

Satya (1998)
Chakravarthy, Urmila Matondkar, Manoj Bajpai, Govind Namdeo
Produced By: Ramgopal Verma
Directed By: Ramgopal Verma
Music By: Vishal
The best ever crime drama of Bollywood. Period. Quentin Tarantino would have been proud of this film, had he made it. A never before exploration of the murky underworld of Mumbai, Satya was a ground breaking film, and an unexpected success, since it had no stars to boast of. It sported hitherto unknown faces like Chakravarthy and Manoj Bajpai, who had seen little success till this film. Highly recommended.

Lagaan (2001)
Aamir Khan, Gracy Singh, Raghubir Yadav, Rachel Shelley
Produced by: Aamir Khan/Jhamu Sugandh
Directed by: Ashutosh Gowarikar
Music by: AR Rehman
Once Upon a Time In India. Thus goes the tagline for the movie Lagaan. Set in the heady days of the British Raj, the film combines the two potent opiums of the Indian masses: Cricket and kitsch Patriotism. It also featured the all-time favourite theme of the underdog, the David pitted against the Goliaths of the world. The heady mix resulted in a big blockbuster, and success and acclaim from all over the world. The film was nominated for the Oscars in the Foreign languages category. The film also introduced a hitherto unknown and neglected factor of successful film-making: Marketing. Since then, the film makers of Bollywood have realized the importance of good marketing for the eventual success of a film.

Dil Chahta Hai (2001)
Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Dimple Kapadia, Preity Zinta.
Produced by: Ritesh Sidhwani
Directed by: Farhaan Akhtar
Music by: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy
The year 2001 proved to be exceptional for Aamir Khan. After Lagaan, another of his movies proved to be a box office hit. This film makes it to the list due to the many firsts to its credit. It is one of the pioneers of the New Age Cinema. It was written and directed by the young and talented Farhan Akhtar. It explored themes such as male bonding, falling in love with an older person, friendship and reconciliation. Watch the film for the crackling chemistry between the three main protagonists, Aamir Khan, Akshaye Khanna and Saif Ali Khan.
